Horses (Watercolor and Pastel on Arches, 11×14)

This is the first in a series of horse paintings. Horses are exciting subjects for me because of their strong, muscular forms. I like the way the light reflects off their smooth coats and delicate whiskers.

Supper

Supper (11×14)

7 pm on a windy day in June. This guy was enjoying his solitude in a large grassy pasture near my home. I loved how his tail, mane, and the clump of grass were all blowing in the breeze. The low sun created warm highlights on his coat and the blue sky reflected as shades of lavender.

Brown Horse

Dark Bay Horse (11×14)

How often, when observing an animal, do we notice it’s wrinkles? Yes, this horse is dark brown and he has four legs like any other horse. But I looked for his subtle features — the wrinkles in the crease of his mouth, the veins of his legs, and his long eyelashes — and took advantage of the late afternoon sun to highlight them. Always look at things from a new and interesting perspective.
